Can you print on dark-colored fabrics?

It depends on the printing method and fabric type. Here's how each technique handles dark backgrounds.

Digital pigment printing on natural fabrics (Kornit Presto)

Our digital pigment printing system for natural fabrics (cotton, linen, viscose, jersey) prints directly onto pre-made fabric rolls that you provide or select from our range. The fabric arrives in its base color — typically white or off-white — and the print is applied on top.

If you want to print on a dark base fabric (e.g. black cotton or navy linen), the results will vary. Dark pigment inks can be printed over light backgrounds with excellent coverage and vibrancy. However, printing light colors — particularly white — on top of dark fabric requires a white ink underbase, which affects the hand-feel and adds a slight texture to the print area. For most all-over pattern prints and repeating designs, we recommend starting with a white or light-colored base fabric and incorporating dark tones into the design itself — this gives the best color accuracy.

DTF printing on finished garments

DTF (Direct to Film) handles dark backgrounds very well. Because the design is transferred as a complete layered film (including a white underbase layer built into the transfer), it prints accurately on black, navy, red, and other dark garments. Color representation is consistent regardless of the garment's base color.

This is one of DTF's key advantages over sublimation and makes it the preferred method for dark-garment printing.

Sublimation on polyester fabrics

Sublimation dye bonds with polyester fibers and requires a white or light base to display colors accurately. On dark polyester, the dye cannot effectively overprint the existing color, which means sublimation is not suitable for printing on pre-colored dark fabrics.
