Understanding Waterproof Fabric Ratings

Not all waterproof fabrics offer the same level of protection. The key technical specifications to look for are:

Water resistance (mm) measures how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before it starts to leak. A rating of 10,000mm — as found in our Softshell Waterproof 320gsm — is sufficient for sustained heavy rain and active outdoor use. Our Oxford Waterproof provides reliable everyday water repellency for bags and non-garment applications.

Breathability (gsm/24h) measures how much moisture vapour can pass through the fabric in 24 hours. Higher breathability means less condensation build-up inside a garment during physical activity. Our Softshell Waterproof 320gsm offers 5,000gsm/24h breathability, suitable for moderate-intensity outdoor activities.

Stretch determines how the fabric moves and fits. Both softshell options include elastane for four-way stretch, making them suitable for fitted, performance-oriented garments. The Oxford Waterproof is non-stretch, giving it the dimensional stability needed for structured bag and accessory construction.
