What is Crepe fabric

Crepe was originally a French word meaning crinkle. Nowadays crepe is used to describe a particular fabric with a pebbly or crinkled texture. True crepe fabrics are obtained by plain weaving extremely high-twist (over-twisted) yarns, where the yarn is twisted so tightly that it loops back on itself which, when woven creates the pebbled texture. Crepe fabrics are often used for blouses and dresses with graceful drape as well as lingerie. Almost any fiber may be used, and the fabric can be thin and sheer, fine and opaque, or even heavy.
Crepe fabrics are "lively", which means they are springy when compressed and released. The high twist yarns create this effect.
